How To

Tips on how to drive a nail in wood

When driving a nail into wood, it is important to first choose the correct size and kind of hammer. The most popular types of hammers include claw hammers as well as mallets and ball peenhammers. Each type of tool has its advantages and drawbacks. A clawhammer works best when hitting something hard like nails. However, it can sometimes be difficult to see exactly where the strike is going. Although a sledgehammer can be used to hit large areas quickly, it is too heavy to be useful for small tasks.

After selecting the right hammer, you will need to place your hand flat against one side of the head. The handle should rest comfortably in your hands. Hold the handle in your hand, but don’t force it too hard that you break. Your wrist should be relaxed while you hold the hammer straight upwards. Swing the hammer back towards the ground, with your aim at the middle of the nail. You should feel the impact of the hammer striking the nail. If you're having trouble getting the hang of swinging a hammer, practice with a block of wood until you get the rhythm down.

When you're ready to start driving the nail, hold the hammer in front of you close to your body. Position the nail, so it's perpendicular to the surface of the wood. Keep your focus on the tip of each nail. Move the hammer forward and then continue to move the hammerhead. This can be repeated several times to increase the speed of your swing. Try adding power to your swings when you've mastered the technique. To make it more powerful, hold the hammer up high to your shoulder and then bring it down. You'll have more energy to work with.

After you have nailed the hole, take the hammer off the nail. Use a pry bar or screwdriver to pull out the rest of the nails. To avoid splitting the wood, make sure the nail heads are not touching the board's surface.
