Chainsaw Wood Carving

The art of chainsaw wood carving is an art form that many artists are beginning to explore. The art is a natural extension of their skill set and often involves a combination of traditional carving techniques and modern designs. Since the 1960s, Crager and Tracie Dugas have been carving beautiful wood pieces. They try to stay home as much as they can to do some staining or painting between shows. His daughters are now involved in his work as well, helping out on occasion with painting or staining. They prefer to use white pine which is lighter and less likely than black pine to crack.

Rich Anderson

Rich Anderson is a chainsaw wood carving artist from Reedsport. He is a Poughkeepsie local and lives there with his wife, and son. Anderson is a graduate in fine arts with several degrees. He also teaches art to pre-K to fifth graders. Anderson has carved sculptures all over Long Island. He also has sculptures from Colorado. His sculptures range from tall trees to small pieces such as corn ear sculptures. He is currently working on a sign for Youngs Farm in Riverhead.

A $400 chainsaw allows him to create beautiful sculptures that would take days to chisel out of a tree. Chainsaw wood carving can also be used to create beautiful sculptures that are more environmentally friendly than hammers and chisels. Anderson promotes his business by word of mouth. He has created a huge cobra and great blue heron to help a Wading River mechanic.

Tracie Dugas

The life-size wizard carved from wood by Tracie Dugas is an impressive example of her skill as a chainsaw wood carver. The 49 year old young woman lives in Clare Nova Scotia, near Digby and Yarmouth. The chainsaw woodcarver was among several artists who displayed their works during the Canada Day weekend, Sydney, Nova Scotia. Although tourists flooded Sydney's waterfront, the dry spell allowed locals to take in the view of the chainsaw artist and enjoy the waterway.

Tim Crager

While Tim Crager didn't consider himself an artist and was only moderately talented with a chainsaw, his passion for carving turned into a full-time career six years ago. Crager sold more than $1million worth of carvings over the Eastern U.S. in his six-year career. Crager was brought up in Garrett, Eastern Kentucky. As a child, he watched a chainsaw carver at work. The artist's style captivated him, so one day he called his boss and put in his two-week notice.

Crager prefers white Pine because it's easy to find from tree trimming firms. Some people prefer other woods. Crager is a follower of the grain and allows the saw to guide his creations. Crager knows what he wants to create before he even begins a project. But he may change his mind halfway through. For small projects, it takes less than an hour. Large carvings can take 33 to 35hrs.

Don Scoggins

Don Scoggins, a chainsaw wood carver, is his name. His wood carvings often include many animals and are very detailed. His creations have attracted attention from tourists and neighbors alike. Blue Arrow Farm's entry and coffee shop is adorned by chainsaw sculptures so detailed and large that they can be seen from all angles. Blue Arrow Farm's owner is Don Oriolo. He also manages Felix the Cat. Kacie Oriolo, Don Oriolo’s wife, met while they were competing in a New Jersey State Fair-sponsored chainsaw contest.

The award-winning wood carver began carving at a competition in Reedsport, Oregon, 15 years ago. He had already carved by hand, but he had never used a chainsaw before. His carvings now include an animal, a mother bear, and a squirrel looking out from a tree. Now he is preparing for the National Chainsaw Carving Competition.

But before he became famous, he spent years carving for the timber industry and met other like-minded people. These are just a few of the many things that made him a top-notch wood carver.

FAQ

How can I learn basic woodworking skills

Building a bench is a great way to get started in furniture building. You can do this project using any type of wood you have on hand at home. If you are unsure what type of wood is best, you can get cheap pine boards at Lowes (or Home Depot) instead. Once you have built your bench, you will need to sand it off and then finish it with a stain/varnish.

How long does a piece take to finish?

It depends on the wood type you choose, the complexity and the amount you apply to the finished product. For example, hardwoods require more maintenance than softwoods. Hardwoods also tend to be more expensive than softwoods. They last longer and are more resistant to moisture. The process of finishing a piece of furniture typically takes anywhere from one week to three months.

How much money will I need to get started?

Because every project is unique, there aren't exact numbers. These factors will help you get an estimate of how much money is needed.

  • Materials cost
  • Tools and equipment
  • Time spent working on this project
  • Hourly rate
  • What is your expectation for profit?
  • You can hire help, regardless of whether you have a plan.

For those just beginning, it may be a good idea to start small with simple items like boxes and picture frames. As you gain experience, more difficult projects will become possible.

How much does a hobbyist need to invest in getting started?

You will need capital to purchase the tools and supplies you need to start your woodworking business. You can start by purchasing a small table saw and drill press as well as a circular saw, circular saw, jigsaw and sanding machines. These items aren’t too expensive so you won’t have to break the bank.

Which material would you recommend for woodworking lessons?

You can start with softwoods like pine or poplar. After you are comfortable with the softwoods, move to hardwood.

Where can you buy hardwood lumber?

Home Depot offers hardwood lumber. They offer a wide range of wood products including flooring, cabinets, furniture and more.

There is also a wide selection of engineered hardwoods, including Ipe (Araucaria Angustifolia), Brazilian Cherry(Pau d'Arco), Mahogany (Swietenia Mcrophylla).

You can find these woods for sale online by searching "hardwood lumber" on Google.

Statistics

  • The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) estimates that the number of jobs for woodworkers will decline by 4% between 2019 and 2029. (indeed.com)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • The best-paid 10 percent make $76,000, while the lowest-paid 10 percent make $34,000. (zippia.com)

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will help you join two pieces of wooden together. The "pocket hole joint" is a method whereby we drill holes into the wood and glue them together. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. You might consider dowel joinery if your wood isn’t straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Start by measuring and marking the spot where the pocket hole joint will be placed. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue to both ends of the wood. Allow it to sit for approximately 5 minutes before you clamp the pieces together.
  4. Secure the pieces together. After the glue has dried properly, clamp the pieces together to make sure they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim any excess wood surrounding the joint once the glue has dried completely.

To be able to turn the pieces inside-out, leave enough room between them.
