Simple whittling is an inexpensive and easy way to earn the Woodcarving merit card. Name tags and badges make great projects for whittling. Scouts can choose to whittle badges or nametags with wood burning. Plaques are a good example of larger pieces that can be used for whittling.

Superhero logos are straightforward

While there are lots of superhero movies to choose from these days, many of the logos are very simple and easy to carve. The bat and the diamond S on Superman’s shield are great starting points. Spiderman's web is an easy design. The Joker card, on the other hand, is very simple to carve. After the Cub Scouts master the art of whittling the logo they can decorate a mirror or dresser with the final product.

Shazam! logo makes use of a cloudy dark sky as its background. To symbolize the comic tale, this logo uses lighting and text in three dimensions. While superheroes use logos as a way to communicate their stories, the whittling program for cubscouts can also focus on brand names or businesses. Although superheroes are usually associated with comic books, logos for superheroes bridge the gap between business and whittling.

Morfmir’s whittled sets of chess

A whittled chess set makes a great project for the cub scouts' Webelos Craftsman activity badge. The set is made from non-wood materials, and includes instructions and a parts list. The project of making a hardware set of chess pieces is easy and kids will have fun playing the game.

A boy scout from New Hampshire created this unique set of chess pieces. Chandler Francis completed a metalworking merit card and made the board, pieces, and other parts at the blacksmithing pavillon. The "Sinquefield invention Lab," named in honor of Dr. Jeanne Sinquefield is where the Scouts learn how to use technology and receive hands-on training. The project involved using a laser and 3D printer.

Woodcarving ranks as one of the most popular Cub Scout elective medals. It is possible to earn it either as a cub and an older boy. This badge requires basic woodcarving skills, safety, and the use of tools. Scouts can complete the Woodcarving requirements in their councils, or through a special camp. These are some tips that will help you earn your badge.

To complete this badge, you will need a good knife. For this activity, a small and well-sharpened knife or small folder are a good choice. Though thumb guards made with duct tape are optional, they can be extremely useful. Another option is to use duct-tape reinforced leather gloves. This will protect your hands while you hold a knife. You will need to keep these items safely stored during the project.

Woodcarving with the pocketknife

This activity is perfect if you want to teach Cub Scouts how safely to use a Pocketknife. They'll enjoy creating their own unique crafts if they are taught safety tips and have a sharp knife. Woodcarving can also be a great way for them to learn knife skills and have a light, safe touch.

FAQ

Can I make a living doing this?

Yes! Many woodworkers have this ability. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual woodworker wage was $34,000 in May 2012. This is more than the national average of 31,000 per annum.

How do I determine what kind of wood my project is made from?

Always inspect the label when buying wood. The label should include information about the wood species and its moisture content as well as whether or not it has been treated using preservatives.

What is the minimum investment a hobbyist needs to make in order to get started?

If you're looking to start your own woodworking business, you'll probably need some capital to buy the necessary tools and supplies. You can start by purchasing a small table saw and drill press as well as a circular saw, circular saw, jigsaw and sanding machines. These items aren’t too expensive so you won’t have to break the bank.

Where can I purchase hardwood lumber?

Home Depot sells hardwood lumber. You will find a range of wood products available at Home Depot.

You can also find a large selection of engineered hardwoods like Ipe (Araucaria Angustifolia), Brazilian Cherry, and Mahogany in their collection (Swietenia Macedonilla).

These woods can also be purchased online by simply searching Google for "hardwood timber"

Which material would you recommend for woodworking lessons?

Start with softwoods, such as pine or poplar. After you are comfortable with the softwoods, move to hardwood.

Are there any other things I should know regarding woodworking?

It is easy for people to overlook the work involved in furniture making. Finding the right wood is the hardest part. There are so many varieties of wood available that choosing one can be difficult.

Another problem is that not all wood has uniform properties. Wooden can split or crack, while some woods may warp. These things should be considered before you buy wood.

Statistics

  • Average lumber prices rose about 600 percent between April 2020 and May 2021. (familyhandyman.com)
  • Overall employment of woodworkers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2020 to 2030, about as fast as the average for all occupations. (bls.gov)
  • If your lumber isn't as dry as you would like when you purchase it (over 22% in Glen Huey's opinion…probably over 10-15% in my opinion), then it's a good idea to let it acclimate to your workshop for a couple of weeks. (woodandshop.com)
  • The best-paid 10 percent make $76,000, while the lowest-paid 10 percent make $34,000. (zippia.com)

How To

How to stain wood

Stain wood is a process that involves applying chemicals to the surface of wood, which changes its color. This chemical reaction causes the wood to change from white to brownish red. Oak is the most commonly used wood for staining, but other woods can also be stained.

There are many ways to stain wood surfaces. Some methods include mixing the stain along with a solvent like turpentine and then applying the mixture to the wood by brushing or spraying. Other methods use a solution of water and dye applied directly to the wood. You can mix stains into varnishes or paints to make them part of your finish coat.

The first step in staining wood is preparing the surface. You must clean the wood well to remove any grease or dirt that might interfere with the application of the stain. Sanding the wood smooths out rough spots and scratches. Then you must decide what kind of stain you want to use. There are two basic kinds of stains: penetrating stains and non-penetrating stains. Penetrating stains penetrate deeper into the wood than non-penetrating ones, making them ideal for dark colors such as mahogany. Non-penetrating stains work best with light colors like maple.

You will need to decide on the type of stain you want to use, and then prepare your tools. The best tool for applying stains is a paintbrush. It allows you to evenly distribute the liquid over the surface. To remove any stains left behind after painting, you will need some rags. If you plan to mix the stain yourself, make sure you have enough containers available to hold the different components of the mixture.

Once you have prepared all your materials, it is time to clean the areas where you will stain the wood. Use soap and warm water to remove dust and grime. Wipe down all furniture pieces with a dampened cloth and clean water. Be sure to get rid of all loose material, especially if staining is planned for darker wood.

Apply the stain next. Start at one end of the piece of furniture and brush or spray the stain onto the wood. Slowly and carefully work your way along the grain to reach the opposite end. You must be careful not to allow the stain to drip off the wood's edges. Before you proceed with the next steps, let the stain dry completely.

Apply a clear polyurethane sealant to protect the painted surface. Three coats of polyurethane sealing agent are required. Allow the third coat to dry overnight before sanding the final coat.
