Construction of a Scroll Saw Shadow Box

things to build in your garage

A scroll saw shadowbox can be used to display artwork or photos. A shadow box of small size can give a sense of wonder. One simple scene can be created from seven layers 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood. It measures approximately 4 inches square and 1.75 inch thick. The finished piece has small details that add depth and interest. To increase the size and complexity of a shadowbox, you would need to add more detail. This scene is the inside of a shadow box.

How To

How to make wood joints

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We'll use the "pocket hole joint," which means we drill holes in the wood and then glue them together. This works well if the wood is straight and smooth. You may want to consider other methods, such as dowel joining. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. You will need to measure and mark the exact location of your pocket hole joint. You will then drill 3/4" deep holes through each piece of wood with a jigsaw, handheld drilling machine, or hand-held drill.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the wood's edges will ensure that the joint doesn't split.
  3. Glue Together. Apply glue on both sides of the wooden plank. Allow it to cool for at least 5 minutes before you attach the pieces.
  4. Clamp the Pieces Together. After the glue has dried thoroughly, secure the pieces so that they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

Make sure to leave enough room between the pieces so that you can turn them inside and out.
