A DIY nightstand can be a good idea if you have extra room or you need to store more items. With some basic plans, you can build a functional storage system for under your mattress. You can add a magnetic lock to one or both compartments. After the project is completed, foam inserts can be added to the top or bottom of the compartments.

Make a DIY nightstand using a drawer and hidden compartment

First, cut the onex12 boards to make a DIY nightstand. You should use the same measurements for your side panels as they should be tightly fitted together. Mark the tenon locations at both ends of the boards to ensure square drawers. Attach the pieces by gluing them together.

You can also use Ikea furniture to create a DIY nightstand. These pieces are flexible and easily customizable. You can also use these pieces for other purposes, such as books, and other items. These pieces are affordable and easy to replicate if you have enough wood. These pieces can be made unique and customized to match your decor.

Install a locking device

Hidden compartment nightstands are a type bedside table with two drawers. They are designed for bedroom security. It is a secure way to store valuables, since it features two compartments hidden below and above the main drawer. Each compartment has a unique access point, and they can both be locked once closed. The nightstand can be seen from the outside, but it has the appearance and feel of a normal nightstand.

For a magnetic lock to be installed, you will need to drill small holes in the top and bottom compartments of the nightstand. Once the hole is drilled, the magnetic lock should be placed in the center of the compartment's face. To open the drawer push the magnet with one side. For hidden magnetic locks, you can either buy one at a hardware shop or order it online. This step is optional.

For the top and/or for bottom compartments, add foam inserts

You can add 2 storage compartments to your nightstand design if you need more storage. The top compartment measures 13 inches by 2 inches, while the bottom compartment measures 13 inches by 2.5 inches. Both of these compartments have felt lined interiors. The hidden compartment nightstand plans feature a two-step access system. Additional storage space can be created by adding foam inserts to either the top of bottom drawers.

What material would you recommend to start learning woodworking?

You can start with softwoods like pine or poplar. These two are the easiest to master, then you can transition to hardwood.

How long does it take for furniture to be finished?

It all depends on what type of wood you use, how complex your design is, and how much finishing you use. Hardwoods require more care than softwoods. Hardwoods are also more expensive than softwoods. However, they are stronger and more resistant to moisture. The typical time taken to finish a piece furniture takes anywhere from one to three month.

How To

How to make wood joint

This tutorial will demonstrate how to join two pieces together of wood. We will be using the "pocket-hole joint", which involves drilling holes in wood and then gluing them together. This method works great if your wood is straight and smooth. Dowel joinery might be a better option if your wood is not straight or flat. Here are the steps

  1. Drill Pocket Hole Joints. Measure and mark the location where you would like to place the pocket hole joint. Then drill 3/4 inch deep holes into the ends of each piece of wood using a jig saw or handheld drilling machine.
  2. Sand Smooth. Sanding the edges of the wood will help to prevent the joint from splitting later.
  3. Glue the two sides of the wood together. Apply glue to both sides of the wood. Let the wood sit for 5 minutes, then clamp it together.
  4. Fix the Pieces together. After the glue has dried properly, clamp the pieces together to make sure they are flush.
  5. Trim Joinery. Trim the excess wood around the joint after the glue has dried completely.

Allow enough space between pieces so you can turn them inside out.
